Eger: The Confluence of History and Fine Wines
For many Hungarians, Eger is undoubtedly a symbol of valor and fine wine. As a gem in northern Hungary, Eger is steeped in history and elegant cultural ambiance. In this city, you can savor fine wines, immerse yourself in history, and explore the unknown.
Eger Castle is a must-visit. This castle witnessed the Battle of Eger in 1552, where local soldiers bravely resisted the invasion of the Ottoman Empire. Within the castle, there’s a museum that showcases the lifestyle and battle scenes of that era, as if transporting you back to that smoke-filled age. Let’s step into the castle and experience its indescribable historical charm.
We’ll head to Eger’s wine cellar district, one of Hungary’s most famous wine regions, especially known for the red wine called “Egri Bikavér”. Upon entering the cellar, you’ll immediately be greeted by a scent blending wine and oak. Here, you can taste a variety of wines, listen to the cellar owner’s wine stories, and appreciate the Hungarians’ love for wine.
Pécs: The Flourishing of Cultural Arts
Leaving Eger, our next stop is Pécs. This city boasts a rich cultural heritage, complete with ancient historical relics and modern artistic elements. Here, you can see numerous Roman-era buildings and appreciate some modern art pieces.
Our first stop in Pécs is the cathedral, a building that combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. In this cathedral, you can see exquisite murals and stained glass, and listen to the melodious bell ringing, as if telling the city’s history.
Next, we will visit the Zsolnay Ceramic Factory. Zsolnay ceramics are a major Hungarian specialty, renowned worldwide for their unique colors and craftsmanship. In this factory, you can see how artists manually create these exquisite ceramics. You can also purchase some souvenirs here as a memento of this trip.
Harkány: The Healing Power of Hot Springs
Our journey will end in Harkány. Known as a “natural hot spring resort,” the spring water here is rich in minerals and has a miraculous effect in treating various diseases.
In Harkány, you can relax in the spring water and feel the healing power of nature. Imagine this: after a day’s journey, you sit in the hot spring, gazing at the stars in the night sky, and feel a sense of peace that is simply wonderful.
